Demystifying Development & Production
01 — Shook Ones
Week 1 we identify your goals over the this 6 week course. Learn the back of house jobs in PD and production, and the pitfalls of over specialization too early in your career. Overview of the product life cycle and development calendars for different product categories (wovens, cut and sew knits, leather outerwear, etc.)
02 — C.R.E.A.M
Budgets and Costing. In week 2, we begin mapping out a development budget. Raw material strategy, allocation, and the benefit of vertically sourced materials vs. nominated suppliers. How to negotiate with mills and factories up front, and ways unforseen costs can sneak into a garment’s final costing. Final week to drop class.
03 — Ready or Not
Learn to troubleshoot and anticipate potential production issues while in development. Foster partnerships with your factories so that you can set the framework to delegate non value added tasks as your business grows.
04 — M.E.T.H.O.D, man
Week 4 tackles how to create SOP’s that are malleable, and most importantly, scaleable. Review global testing requirements and industry standards, and how to eliminate redundancy in process, one of the biggest offenders in reduced productivity and waste. Exam with case study for both a corporate and startup model.
05 — The Jump Off
Recap and review exam and case study materials. Determine benefits of domestic vs. international bulk production. Exploring the DTC model, and advantages vs. risk. Reducing liability, and utilizing waste in the production process. Leveraging relationships between mills and factories to foster innovation
06 — All About You
Personalized resume review and/ or line planning. Problem solving current issues. Our final week is dedicated to connecting all of the coursework and preparing you for your next step. Fin.
